Once again Congress stalls on Immigration, Obama mulls massive Executive Order move

The President’s plans to act independently on immigration have sparked debate in Washington, with some Republicans calling for impeachment proceedings. The White House is reportedly looking to grant work permits to millions of immigrants in the US illegally, allowing them to remain in the country without fear of deportation. Such a move could have dramatic implications for the mid-term elections, prompting a re-evaluation of the political landscape. Questions remain over whether Congress will be able to pass legislation on the issue, or if the President will have to take matters into his own hands.

The humanitarian crisis in South Texas, where tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors from Central America have been arriving, has not deterred President Obama from making plans to address some of the 11.5 million immigrants in the US illegally. Last month, he declared that congressional efforts to reform the nation’s broken immigration system had failed, and that he would take action to fix the system where he could.

Obama has requested $3.7 billion to address the crisis of unaccompanied youths, but this request has gone unanswered, even as the House and Senate rush to find a solution before their August recess.
