Mainstream Media Outlets Ignore ‘Occupy Wall Street’ Protests

Hundreds of protesters have taken to the streets of the Financial District in New York City in recent days, gathering in Zuccotti Park and marching in the shadow of Wall Street to voice their anger and frustration over the economic crisis. The encampment, which has grown to hundreds of people, has been sustained by donations of food and money from supporters. Keith Olbermann, an American political commentator, has pointed out on his show, Countdown, that major newspapers have been slow to cover the protests, despite the fact that similar sized Tea Party protests have been widely reported.

The economic crisis has had a devastating impact on the American people, with 25 million unemployed and 46.2 million living in poverty, according to recent Census data. Wall Street executives have gone largely unpunished for their role in the crisis, with many receiving significant bonuses despite their firms’ losses. The government’s bailout of the financial industry has done little to alleviate the suffering of those affected.

The protests in New York City have been a powerful expression of the public’s anger and frustration. With donations of food and money, the encampment has grown to hundreds of people and has become a symbol of the economic inequality that has been so pervasive in recent years. It remains to be seen if the major news outlets will take notice and give the protests the attention they deserve.

Yahoo recently admitted that emails containing links to the Occupy Wall Street website were blocked, though emails with links to other activist websites such as americansforprosperity.org and teapartypatriots.org were not affected. The company said that the issue was not intentional and that it may be resolved, though users may experience some residual delays.

The Occupy Wall Street Group has been met with police force, with some protesters arrested for putting up tents in the rain. One activist, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed outrage at the intolerance and disrespect of free speech and dissent, as well as the budget cuts that have been implemented by the wealthy. She also questioned the presence of an NYPD Counter Terrorism truck, asking if it was meant to intimidate the protesters. The group recently posted a series of brainstorming talking point demands on The Daily Kos.
