“The Fierce Urgency of Now,” 45 Years Later

Posted on 05 June 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: Bobby Kennedy, Chicago, clinton, I Have a Dream, John McCain, Kenya, Martin Luther King, Minneapolis, obama, President, Senate, Xcel Energy Center

The last 36-hours have been overwhelming in historical significance. A young black man, born of mixed-race parents, raised by a single white mother in Indonesia and later white grandparents in Hawaii, obtained a top Ivy League education, worked as a lawyer in Chicago helping to organise union members, ran unsuccessfully for Congress, then became a [...]

Is it over?

Posted on 04 June 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: Chicago, clinton, CNN, Court TV, delegate count, Excel Center, FOX, John McCain, Louisiana, Minneapolis, Montana, Mr. Rogers, New York, obama, OJ Simpson trial, South Dakota

Can we come out now and go back to our lives? No? Barack has won but Hillary has not conceded? Aaaaargh! I feel like I did living in LA during the OJ Simpson trial. Will the government offer any counselling or addiction relief therapy to political junkies who will have scant little to do between [...]

Top Ten Democratic T-Shirts

Posted on 03 June 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: clinton, obama, T-shirts, Top 10 list

The new magic number of 2,118 delegates to nominate is here and now that Michigan and Florida have been seated via compromise, it appears we have a nominee, even though we have a fractured party. So I spent this past weekend thinking about a new business and T-shirt ideas for this coming week announcing the [...]

Denver, Sioux Falls, Billings, San Juan… Aboooaaarrd!

Posted on 31 May 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: 50-state campaign, Bill Clinton, By laws committee, change, clinton, Democratic Primary wind down, Denver, Hope, Howard Dean, internet, Mark Penn, Michelle Obama, Michigan and Florida, Montana, obama, Puerto Rico, Raock Star appeal, Rush Limbaugh, South Dakota, Super Tuesday, wander off the reservation, White Voters Outside Appalachia, WVOA

The Democrat Primary local heads this weekend to a crucial (yawn) convention by-laws committee meeting that seems certain to have the thrill and impact of a wet firecracker vs. Hillary’s much feared nuclear option of three weeks ago. The Michigan and Florida delegations will be seated but with a 50% penalty and the delegates split [...]

I’ll Go Away, No… Wait A Minute

Posted on 28 May 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: Al Gore, career meltdown, clinton, Company, Elaine Stritch, George Furth, Go Away No Wait a Minute, Howard Dean, last primaries, Lorrie Morgan, obama, Stephen Sondheim, super delegates

I felt today a cross between Bobby, the unmarried suffering star of the 70’s hit musical Company and country singer Lorrie Morgan, who sang the 1998 country music hit ‘Go Away.’ The “I’m conceding, no I’m not” antics of the Clinton campaign today have been tragic to follow. Bobby struggled though George Furth’s 11 scatological, 1-act plays set [...]

She Said What?!?!?!

Posted on 24 May 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: 1968, apologising, Bobby Kennedy, clinton, DNA flaw, June, Mike Huckabee, NRA, obama, PMQs, political food chain, political survival, saying sorry, seeds of doubt, South Dakota, Swift-boat advert, Tony Blair

In yet another incident of foot in mouth disease, Senator Hillary Clinton yesterday voiced the unspoken/unthinkable fear of many by cravenly invoking the horrible memory of 1968’s assassination of Bobby Kennedy in California before a group of South Dakota news editors. Her half-hearted apology for the gaffe seemed as self-protecting and disingenuous as her explanation [...]

Nuclear Options Have Unpredictable Fallout

Posted on 22 May 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: clinton, Convention, delegates, Democratic National Committee, DNC Chairman, Florida, Howard Dean, Iowa, Michigan, New Hampshire, nuclear option, obama, rules and bylaw committee

We wrote about the so-called “nuclear option,” Senator Hillary Clinton is hoping to invoke during the 31 May Convention Rules and By-Law committee meeting. Simply, she wants to use her 13-supporting delegates to push through the seating of the entire Florida and Michigan delegations at full strength.
Florida and Michigan did not play by party rules [...]

Op-Ed Column of the Day

Victory Plan for Hillary (click to see full article on nyt.com)

Hillary Clinton scored a whopping victory in West Virginia. Trounced Barack Obama, who is consistently described as the inevitable presidential nominee.
Hard to know exactly what to do with this information.

Would George W. Bush stand for pointed questions on live TV from Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama or John McCain if forced weekly to endure a forum such as the UK’s Wednesday noon mosh pit a.k.a. Prime Minister’s Question time? This is a place where every member of the House, in theory, can ask questions of the PM and his government.  [...]

For 33 Years, “Live, from New York…It’s Saturday Night”

Posted on 15 May 2008 by Denis Campbell | Comments (0) | Tags: Amy Poehler, Chevy Chase, clinton, Dan Akroyd, Garret Morris, Gilda Radner, half season, It's Saturday Night, Jane Curtin, John Belushi, Laraine Newman, Live from New York, Monty Python, NBC, obama, political satire, Rockefeller Center, Saturday Night Live, SNL, Studio 8-H, Weekend Update, WGA strike, writer's strike

This Saturday Night the curtain falls on Season 33 of a program begun in the Fall of my freshman year at University. NBC’s Saturday Night’s first few episodes were mostly forgettable. The show began on 11 October 1975 at 11:30 pm where for 90-minutes cast members, Chevy Chase, Dan Akroyd, Gilda Radner, Laraine Newman, Jane [...]

About The UKProgressive

UK Progressive E-Magazine began during the 2008 US Presidential Campaign and was created to consolidate and replace two blogs created in 2006 called “Outside the Boundaries,” a political blog and “Fire the Guru!” an expose blog of charlatans in the Mind Body Spirit business. It was briefly called The Vadimus Post. That name came from the Latin 'Quo Vadimus' or 'Where Are We Headed?'

When looking for pithy Latin URL names, I’d watched a moving episode of the same name (different tense, Quo Vadis) from Sports Night, an early series created by The West Wing’s Aaron Sorkin. It was the last episode and focused on the sale of the network to an unknown billionaire who asked the question every day of those who worked closest to him. He wanted to know the answer and… Do We Know Why? His rationale: we spend so much time on things urgent, we miss the important and do we ask ourselves (and others) why we are heading in a particular direction?

Well that is what we ask in these Op-Ed pieces, articles, live feeds, video segments and contributions from friends and affiliates. We are blessed to be able to dialogue with you and our aim is to provide independent, critical insight into the issues of the day. UK Progressive is published daily in Monknash, South Wales. Its founder, An American in Wales, is US journalist Denis Campbell who has been based in The Netherlands and the UK the last 11-years.

The opinions expressed are those of each contributor and do not represent the opinion of Denis Campbell (unless expressly authored by him), our advertisers, any related companies and/or their affiliates. UK Progressive is a free, continuously improving news distribution service (because none of us could live with ourselves or face our mothers if every edition did not represent our very best effort). A lot of work goes daily into producing this true labour of love.

While most of us have other day jobs to eat, we’d love to get to the point where we can monetize this so it covers all of our expenses, allows us to pay our contributors for their fine work and helps us to continue to expand and grow. While not like PBS or other media groups shilling for logo umbrellas every ten minutes, we find it embarrassing to even have to ask… and we could use your help.

If you like what you see here and would like to help us bring it to you by making a donation to support future developments, well, we’d really appreciate it. Our PayPal account is named after a lovely canal side café in Lochem, The Netherlands which our office overlooked years ago.

We promise a team cheer and ‘happy dance’ in your name in advance. Thanks.
