Take careful note. Real numbers don’t lie. US unemployment rate, 8.1%. 651,000 jobs lost in February. 4.4 million US jobs lost in this recession. Poll numbers may have more wiggle room and yet the REAL POLITICAL cost of lock-step, mindless, herd bleating No?, Obama latest approval rating 72%* and “Do the Republicans even have a plan?” 58% said NO!*
Now as the leader of the Conservative Party (aka the Tories) with an eye on the prize of residency at Number 10, indeed many have you the presumptive election winner (sometime between now and end of May 2010) and leader of the minority party in the UK House of Commons (home of great weekly theatre known simply as PMQs or Prime Minister’s Question Time), you can either:
- paint yourself into this same corner,
- run out the clock and pray or…
- learn that your country wants you (and your counterparts in the devolved Scottish, Welsh and Northern Ireland Assemblies) to stop the politics of divisive, vitriolic politics NO! and provide a real bipartisan solution to our economic woes and restart inbound investment/create private sector jobs.
We, the taxpayers, now own Lloyds. While that means one less zombie bank running around (and indeed the US has many more), there is an immediate need to print money and become involved in a similar infrastructure creating and preserving US stimulus program here.
The problem, the US is out of their election cycle and you are headed into one where “courageous” action means political suicide. So the question everyone needs to ask you, PM Brown and Mr. Clegg, (leader of the Lib Dem Party) is what truly comes first, party or country? At what point will you remember the initial reason the public selected you for your original seat and why you decided to run? You can do it, we’ll wait… that seeming idealistic reason long before the stench of raising party money, special interests, those seeking to purchase influence and the feeling of being part of an exclusive ‘club’ took over. Remember?
To serve the public.
Seems quaint, but that is what we need now more than ever, so please get busy on that one. Fix that and you will win all votes.
